What should you pack for the Hampta Pass Trek

Hampta Pass Trek is considered a high-altitude trek, requiring specific trekking gear different from what is needed for normal treks. Therefore, it is crucial to carefully go through this entire section. One common question that arises among trekkers is what items to carry while trekking. Below, you will find a comprehensive guide on everything you should bring, following a simple guideline from head to foot. We have organized the list from head to foot for your convenience.

Watch a video on what to pack for your trek

Head Gear

It is essential to have appropriate headgear to protect your head and face while trekking.

Before embarking on your trekking adventure, ensure you have the necessary headgear to shield your face and head from the elements such as sun, wind, and dust. This essential gear will ensure your safety and comfort during the entire journey. Remember to pack it before setting off into the wilderness!

  1. Headlamps – Headlamps are indispensable for night treks as they provide illumination while keeping your hands free. There are various sizes and lumens available, so choose one that best suits your requirements.

  2. Hats or Caps – Caps or hats are essential in varying weather conditions. Caps shield your head from cold winds at night, while hats offer sun protection during the day. Make sure your hat has a strap to prevent it from blowing away in windy conditions.

  3. Sunglasses – Sunglasses are a must-have for trekking to safeguard your eyes from UV rays. Opt for sunglasses that fit securely on your face to prevent them from falling off during challenging terrains. Ensure the glasses are suitable for different weather conditions for optimal visibility.

  4. Buff / Balaclava – Lastly, a buff or balaclava is essential to protect your mouth and neck from extreme temperatures and keep them warm. These accessories come in various materials and designs, so choose one that aligns with your needs and preferences. Buffs and balaclavas can be worn as neck warmers, face masks, or headbands depending on the weather and your activities.

Equipped with these essential items, you can enjoy your trek safely and comfortably regardless of the weather conditions or time of day.

Clothes

Before embarking on a high-altitude trek, it is essential to be prepared for cold weather conditions by dressing in layers. Layering serves the dual purpose of retaining body heat to keep you warm and enabling you to easily adjust your attire as temperatures vary.

Layering is crucial for all seasons during treks in elevated regions. When planning for a high-altitude expedition, it is imperative to anticipate cold weather and opt for a layered clothing approach. Layering effectively insulates your body, ensuring warmth, while also allowing you the flexibility to adapt to changing weather conditions. By layering your clothing, you can comfortably enjoy your trek and remain safe amidst the unpredictable mountain climate.

  1. For spring, summer, and monsoon treks, it is recommended to wear three layers: a woollen sweater, a fleece, and a padded jacket.

  2. For autumn treks, adding an extra fleece layer will create four layers.

  3. For winter treks, consider wearing five layers, including thermals, a woollen sweater, two fleeces, and a padded jacket.

  4. T-shirt/Long sleeve shirt– Bring along three T-shirts and two quick-dry trek pants, wearing one and carrying the rest. Long sleeve shirts offer protection from UV rays. Opt for synthetic T-shirts for quick drying when wet.

  5. Hiking / Trekking Jacket– Choose between down jackets (-5 to -10°C) or two-three-layer jackets.

  6. Thermals– Ensure you have at least two pairs to maintain body warmth in cold conditions.

  7. Undergarments– Pack according to personal hygiene preferences.

  8. Gloves– A single pair of gloves will keep your hands warm.

  9. Trek Pants– Carry 2 to 3 comfortable trekking pants made of synthetic material for quick drying when wet.

  10. Rain Wear– Consider carrying a raincoat or Poncho to stay dry during rainfall or snowfall.

Tip: If opting for a raincoat, bring a small waterproof cover for your backpack to prevent items inside from getting wet. With a Poncho, you won't have this concern as it protects both you and your backpack.

Foot Gear

Proper footwear is crucial when planning a trek, ensuring you have the right gear for your feet.

  1. Trekking shoes should be waterproof with ankle support. Walking/Hiking sandals can be used off-trail, providing relief from heavy boots at the campsite or for stream crossings. Sneakers (Optional) are suitable for casual wear or around the campsite.

  2. Socks– It's advisable to carry at least 3 to 4 pairs.

  3. Microspikes & Gaiters will be provided by Trekup India when necessary, eliminating the need for you to carry them.

How To Plan Your Trek & Reach Manali, Himachal Pradesh?

It is essential to emphasize that all participants need to arrive in Manali at the beginning of the program. To accommodate your travel preferences, we provide three choices:

Option 1: You can opt for an overnight journey on a government bus to Manali. The trip lasts 14 hours from Delhi and 10 hours from Chandigarh. We highly recommend government buses over private ones as they are more dependable and less likely to experience delays. Regardless of your decision, aim to reach Manali between 9 and 10 am.

Option 2: If you prefer flying, the most suitable option is to fly to Delhi or Chandigarh airport and then take a bus to Manali. Another possibility is flying to Bhuntar Airport, which is just two hours away from Manali. However, we discourage this due to the high flight expenses and the potential for flight cancellations. If you do opt for Bhuntar, make sure to arrive at least a day before the trek commencement.

Option 3: Traveling by train is also a viable choice. You can reach Pathankot railway station, where you can board bus services directly to Manali, which is approximately 300 kilometers from the station and will necessitate an overnight journey. If you select this option, it is advisable to arrive in Manali one day in advance.

Rest assured, upon your arrival at the trek assembly point in Manali, Trekup India will manage your transportation to Jobra, Chatru, and back to Manali, including a visit to Chandratal. Please ensure you reach Manali before 10:30 am on the program's first day to ensure a prompt departure to the assembly point.
